Description

Guidance & Learning Counselor – Pre-K through 4th grade

Employment Opportunity: The lower school guidance and learning counselor works with the principal, assistant principal, classroom teachers, middle school guidance and learning counselor, and elementary school ESE teacher to provide a total guidance program for the elementary division. The counselor is a professional member of the school staff who assists the administration in the integration of school-based counseling services for the school community. The guidance counselor creates and implements programs that support the school’s mission. Through counseling, consulting, and program coordination, the lower school guidance, and learning counselor contributes to the entire elementary school program.

This is a 10-month position, with a couple of weeks over the summer to plan. The schedule would be 7:30-4 PM Monday- Friday.

Qualifications:
Have a master’s degree or higher in Counselor Education and/or another counseling-related field
Guidance certification through the State of Florida


Desirable experience:
Previous teaching and/or school-based counseling experience
Exceptional Student Education (ESE) experience
Responsive Classroom Training

Position Responsibilities:

Communication & Consultation

  • Communicates with classroom teachers to assess the developmental needs of the students
  • Provides information to the school community about the school-based school counseling services/activities in a variety of formats
  • Maintains active /supportive communication with the administration.
  • Assists in the development of Student Support Plans for students in grades PreK-4
  • Facilitates student transitions to next grade
  • Coordinates professional consults and facilitates collaboration with professional service providers in order to enhance the students’ learning in the school environment.

Counseling & Advisement

  • Provides resources to parents/guardians in a variety of situations to promote/enhance child’s development
  • Assists students with clarifying academic, social, and spiritual development
  • Provides a variety of intervention formats (individual, small and large group) to assist students in the development of skills such as decision-making, problem-solving, values clarification, self-awareness, tolerance, career planning, and a positive mental attitude
  • Coordinates placement procedures for effective/appropriate use of school resources/services
  • Assists the student in becoming his or her own advocate
  • Communicates regularly with parents and teachers of students with special consideration

Curriculum & Instruction

  • Plans and delivers Responsive Classroom refreshers for the PreK-4 teachers. Leads the Responsive Classroom committee and spearheads ways we can continue to grow in our commitment to Responsive Classroom.
  • Captains Fountas & Pinnell process. Helps support teachers and provides training to new teachers.
  • Enhances grade-level curriculum by providing guidance-related lessons and materials
  • Participate in the evaluation and revision of the school-based school counseling curriculum
  • Coordinate special programming in coordination with middle school guidance and learning counselor (i.e. Red Ribbon Week)
  • Assists with the coordination of the administration of standardized achievement and placement testing
  • Addresses issues that are potentially detrimental to student functioning in a timely manner with the administration
  • Participates in the formulation of pre-referral/referral process for medical/psycho-educational assessment
  • Knowledge of a variety of IQ tests and other assessment instruments; ability to administer and interpret standardized tests
  • Responsible for the creation, implementation and monitoring of Student Support Plans
  • Assists teachers in implementing instructional strategies to meet the needs of individual students with learning difficulties including small group instruction
  • Observes students in a classroom setting
  • In collaboration with the middle school guidance and learning counselor and administration develops and implements specialized in-service programs on specific learning needs and other topics associated with special learning needs

Professionalism

  • Develops and maintains collaborative professional relationships with community service providers in order to enhance the students’ learning in the school environment
  • Is available for the duration of crisis intervention within the school community
  • Participates in activities that develop/strengthen the understanding of the Catholic Faith
  • Maintains affiliation with professional counseling organizations
  • Maintains continuing education credits in accordance with the respective certification/licensure boards
  • Attends professional development opportunities
  • Adheres to all Federal and State laws for reporting child abuse (verbal, emotional, sexual and/or physical), neglect and/or endangerment
  • Adheres to the Safe Environment Policies of the Diocese of St. Petersburg
  • Participates in school-based training and in-service opportunities provided by the school and the Diocese of St. Petersburg
  • Maintains accurate, complete records
  • Perform such tasks and assume other responsibilities as may be assigned by the principal
